Every woman's experience of menopause is different. For some, it arrives quietly with a few disrupted nights of sleep. For others, it brings hot flushes, mood swings and irritability that can feel like they've taken over daily life. Wherever you are on that spectrum, one thing holds true: menopause is a natural transition, not something to push through alone, and the right support can make a meaningful difference.

Understanding Menopause

Menopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive years, officially defined as the point 12 months after her last menstrual period. [1] But the transition itself, known as perimenopause, can begin years earlier as the ovaries gradually produce less oestrogen and progesterone. [2]

This hormonal shift affects far more than the reproductive system. Oestrogen receptors are found throughout the body, in the brain, skin, bones, cardiovascular system and beyond, which is why menopause can influence sleep, mood, temperature regulation and long-term health all at once. [1,3]

Common Symptoms

The symptoms of perimenopause and menopause vary widely from woman to woman, both in type and severity. [1,3] Commonly reported experiences include:

  • Hot flushes

  • Night sweats

  • Interrupted sleep

  • Mood changes

  • Irritability

For many women, these symptoms overlap and compound one another. Poor sleep can worsen irritability, and hot flushes overnight can worsen poor sleep, creating a cycle that can feel difficult to break without the right support.

How Anagenesis Menopause + Olive Leaf Can Help

Anagenesis Olive Leaf Menopause High Phenolic (AUST L 522612) is a comprehensive herbal and olive leaf blend formulated to support women through this transition. It combines high-phenolic olive leaf extract with a range of traditional herbal ingredients, including black cohosh, chaste tree, red clover, sage, maca and withania. Its accepted indications cover relief of symptoms associated with menopause, reduced irritability and hot flushes, and support for restful sleep. [6]

Practitioner Q&A: What to Consider Before Starting a Menopause Formula

Q: At what stage of menopause should someone consider a herbal menopause formula? A: There's no single "right" time. Some women reach for extra support as soon as perimenopausal symptoms begin, others wait until symptoms are more disruptive. What matters most is understanding your individual symptom picture.

Q: Are herbal formulas a replacement for hormone therapy?
A: No, and they're not intended to be. For some women, herbal and/or nutritional support is enough, and for others it may be used alongside other treatments, including hormone therapy, under medical guidance. Menopausal hormone therapy is prescribed by a doctor and is described by Australian clinical sources as the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms. [1,4] That decision should always be made with your GP or practitioner.

Q: Why combine olive leaf with these particular herbs?
A: Each ingredient plays a different role. Olive leaf is a source of polyphenols, principally oleuropein, which have been studied for antioxidant activity [8], while herbs like black cohosh, chaste tree and sage have long traditional use for hot flushes, hormonal balance and mood. Of the herbs traditionally used in this context, black cohosh is the most studied. [5] Combining them allows the formula to address several aspects of the menopausal experience at once, rather than targeting just one symptom.

Q: How long before someone might notice a difference?
A: This varies from person to person. Herbal formulas generally require consistent use over several weeks before benefits become noticeable, so patience and regular use matter. If symptoms persist or worsen, it's important to check back in with your healthcare professional.

Q: Can these formulas be taken alongside other supplements or medications?
A: Often yes, but it should always be reviewed individually. Some herbal ingredients can interact with certain medications, so it's important to let your practitioner or pharmacist know everything else you're taking before starting.

Why Qualified Advice Matters

Two women with similar symptoms may need very different approaches, depending on their health history, current medications, lifestyle and personal preferences. Social media is full of quick-fix claims, but genuine guidance requires understanding your individual picture, not a generic recommendation.

This is exactly where a qualified practitioner adds real value. Rather than guessing which product might help, a proper conversation can uncover what's actually driving your symptoms and whether herbal support, lifestyle changes, or a referral back to your GP is the right next step.

Naturopaths get asked about hot flushes all the time. Ingredients like olive leaf and black cohosh are two of the ones we talk through most often. It's worth understanding what's actually in a formula before you decide if it's right for you.Poppy Osprey, Adv. Dip. Naturopathy, Fellow of ATMS #28476, Mr Vitamins Chatswood.
