Flaxseed
The seed of the flax plant, and you'll also see it sold as linseed.
It comes whole, ground into a meal, or pressed for oil. Whole seed keeps longer in the cupboard, and the meal is ready to stir straight into porridge, a smoothie or a batter.

Is Flaxseed right for you?
Common questions
Is flaxseed the same thing as linseed?
Yes. They're two names for the same seed, from the same plant, Linum usitatissimum. Flaxseed is the name you'll see more often on food packs, and linseed is the older British name, which is also the one the Australian medicines rules use. Whichever name is on the pack, you're buying the same seed, whether it's brown or golden.
Is flaxseed regulated as a medicine in Australia?
Not when it's sold as food. Flax is a permitted ingredient in listed medicines under its botanical and linseed names, items 3052 to 3056 of the Permissible Ingredients Determination. But whole seed, meal and oil sold as food sit under food standards law instead. No flax or linseed permitted indication was found, so there's no TGA-permitted therapeutic wording to cite for it.
