Description
Royal Jelly
The queen bee's food, studied for menopause.
Royal jelly is the creamy food nurse bees make for the queen. Its research focuses on hot flushes and night sweats, and most of those studies used capsules, so they're an easy place to start.

Common questions
Why does the label warn about asthma and allergies so loudly?
Because Australian law requires it. Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) requires "Not to be taken by asthma and allergy sufferers" in 3 mm type on the front of every listed royal jelly medicine, along with a statement that royal jelly has been reported to cause severe allergic reactions and, in rare cases, deaths. Royal jelly sold as a food carries a matching warning. Very few ingredients have this, and it isn't just a formality: there's a published Australian case of asthma caused by royal jelly behind it.
Fresh or freeze-dried. Does one work better?
Nobody knows. The TGA lists fresh, freeze-dried and plain royal jelly as three ingredients with identical rules, and we found no study comparing how well they're absorbed or how well they work. What we can say is that most of the research used capsules, so if you're choosing on the evidence, that points to capsules. The idea that drying damages delicate proteins is reasonable, but it's only an idea.
Queen bees live for years on this stuff. Will it do the same for me?
No, but it's worth knowing where the story comes from. A queen and a worker bee have the same genes. The queen is fed royal jelly for life and lives far longer. Lifespan has also been extended in flies, crickets, silkworms, worms and mice. But there's no human lifespan data at all, so enjoy the bee's story without expecting it to be yours.
