Peanut Butter

Roasted peanuts, ground until they turn into a spread.

That's the whole ingredient list in the natural styles. Others add sugar, salt or palm oil to stop the oil separating out on top. Smooth or crunchy is just how far the grinding went.

What should I look for on the label?

The ingredient list, mostly. Natural styles are peanuts and sometimes salt, nothing else. Others add sugar, palm oil or emulsifiers to stop separation. Neither is wrong, but they're different products. If the oil sitting on top bothers you, that separation is what the additives prevent.

Is peanut butter regulated as a supplement?

No. It's a food, regulated under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code rather than the therapeutic goods framework, and there's no Schedule 1 entry for it. Peanuts are a declarable allergen under that Code, so any product containing them has to say so clearly on the label.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

No Schedule 1 record was found for "peanut butter" in the cached Permissible Ingredients Determination, which is expected: it's a food rather than an ingredient name. Absence isn't prohibition. Peanut butter is lawfully sold as a food under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, which is the framework that governs its labelling. Peanuts are a declarable allergen under that Code, and one of the most serious, so the allergen statement on the label is the thing that matters most here.
