Olive leaf
Heart and circulation support from the olive tree.
Olive leaf is a well-tolerated herb with more heart research than most on the shelf. Choose a product that states its oleuropein per daily dose, ideally around the 100 to 136 mg used in trials.

Is Olive leaf right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
How do I compare two olive leaf products?
By the oleuropein per daily dose. Honestly, nothing else works. Extract milligrams on their own don't tell you how much of the active compounds you're getting, and dried-leaf equivalent grams, the common Australian way of labelling, can't be compared with either. The trials support roughly 100 to 136 mg of oleuropein a day, or 1,000 mg a day of standardised extract. If a label gives you neither figure, you can't tell what you're buying.
Does the research actually agree?
Not entirely, and we'll show you where it doesn't. A review of 12 studies found triglycerides and blood vessel measures improved, but a trial designed specifically to test this, in 77 overweight adults with raised cholesterol, found no change in any blood fat measure. Two reviews even disagree on which dose works, one favouring 500 mg a day and the other 1,000 mg. The fair reading is a modest effect that doesn't show up in every group of people.
What about blood sugar?
The evidence is genuinely mixed. One trial found insulin sensitivity improved by 15% and the insulin-making cells' response by 28%, though inflammation markers also rose in the same trial and the researchers couldn't explain why. Four other studies found no meaningful change, and a careful review found that at low doses, fasting blood sugar actually did better in the comparison group. We'd treat this as unsettled.
Is the tea as good as capsules?
It can reach the amounts used in trials, but you'd be drinking a lot. One review recorded a tea giving 320.8 mg of oleuropein at up to 990 mL a day. How much you get from a home-brewed cup varies a lot with the leaf, the water and how long you steep it, so you can't know your dose. Tea is a lovely traditional way to take it. It just isn't a measured dose.
Can I take it with my heart medicine?
Ask your doctor before you do. Olive leaf may add to the effect of blood pressure medicines, and it's listed as one to avoid alongside them. The same goes for insulin and diabetes tablets. Diltiazem and propranolol are a separate concern, because blood levels of those medicines may rise. None of this means olive leaf is dangerous. It means the combination needs someone who knows your prescriptions.
