Pomegranate

What is pomegranate used for?

Pomegranate is for your glass and your kitchen: 100% juice for drinking, molasses for cooking, vinegar for dressings, or blended into a tulsi tea. There's also a practitioner-only tablet, which one of our naturopaths can choose for you.

Is Pomegranate right for you?

Common questions

Is pomegranate regulated as a medicine in Australia?

It can be. Pomegranate is a permitted ingredient in listed medicines as item 4064 on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), and Punica granatum is listed separately at item 4223. Neither comes with conditions, a dose limit or a required warning, and there's no permitted health claim for pomegranate. Most pomegranate sold here is food rather than medicine, and the juice, molasses and vinegar come under the Food Standards Code instead.

Juice, molasses or vinegar. What's the difference?

It's the same fruit, with three different jobs in the kitchen. The 100% juice is for drinking, and it's worth checking the ingredient list if you want pomegranate and nothing else. Molasses is a thick, tangy syrup used in cooking, especially in Middle Eastern dishes. The vinegar goes into dressings and marinades. None of the three is sold as a medicine, so choose by what you plan to make.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Pomegranate has two entries on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026). POMEGRANATE is item 4064, in volume 5, allowed in listed medicines as a non-active ingredient (purpose code E). The botanical name has its own entry: PUNICA GRANATUM at item 4223, also in volume 5, allowed as an active (A) or non-active (E) ingredient, plus a third code we couldn't find an explanation for. Neither entry has a specific requirement, dose cap or warning statement. Those entries mean pomegranate can be used in a listed medicine; they don't make it a therapeutic active, and we found no pomegranate permitted indication across all 17 Parts of Schedule 1 of the Permissible Indications Determination. So there's no listed-medicine claim wording to quote here. Most pomegranate sold in Australia is food anyway. Juice, molasses, vinegar and tea come under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code rather than the medicines rules, and food carries no right to TGA health claims at all. Having no permitted indication doesn't mean it's banned; it reflects that pomegranate is legally sold, and mostly eaten and drunk, as a food. Being allowed isn't the government endorsing a product.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 4064.
