Vitamin D3
Your body can't use the calcium you eat without vitamin D, and D3's the form your own skin makes in sunlight.
Most D3 sold here starts out as lanolin from sheep wool, and the vegan version's made from lichen instead. It's the same molecule either way. What trips people up isn't the source, it's the units. Micrograms in the rules, international units on the label.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Is vitamin D3 better than vitamin D2?
For raising the blood marker, most evidence says yes. NIH states D3 increases serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D more and maintains higher levels longer. A meta-analysis of seven trials in 1,016 adults found D3 raised it 15.2 nmol/L further than D2. But that advantage came from single large doses, and with daily dosing the difference was not statistically significant.
How many IU is 25 micrograms of vitamin D3?
Exactly 1,000 IU, because one microgram of vitamin D equals 40 international units. The same arithmetic makes 10 µg equal 400 IU and 50 µg equal 2,000 IU. Australian regulation is written in micrograms and Australian labels are printed in international units, so converting first is the only way to compare two products fairly.
Is vitamin D3 vegan?
Not usually. Standard D3 is made by irradiating 7-dehydrocholesterol obtained from lanolin, which comes from sheep wool. An animal-free version sourced from lichen is available and is the same colecalciferol molecule, so it is not a weaker product. Vitamin D2 from yeast or UV-exposed mushrooms is vegan by default but is a different form.
Why do Australian vitamin D3 supplements stop at 1,000 IU?
Because the Permissible Ingredients Determination caps a listed medicine for internal use at 25 micrograms of vitamin D per maximum daily dose, and 25 micrograms is 1,000 IU. Higher strengths sit outside that pathway. If a blood test shows you need more, that is a conversation with your doctor rather than a shelf decision.
