Brahmi

The traditional Ayurvedic herb, also known as bacopa.

Brahmi is the Ayurvedic name for Bacopa monnieri, a small creeping plant, and that's the name you'll see on the ingredient list. Choose it on its own in tablets or capsules, or blended with other herbs.

See what we checked

Is Brahmi right for you?

These are the questions our naturopaths ask in store about brahmi. There's no TGA-permitted health claim for this herb, so we can't tell you what it's for. What we can do is help you read the label, and raise the question that matters most: how brahmi gets on with an antidepressant.

A good fit if

  • You're an adult buying it for yourself, and you've read the label of the product in your hand
  • You know brahmi and bacopa are the same herb, and you want to check the botanical name before you buy
  • You're happy to bring your list of medicines to us first, rather than starting and hoping for the best

Check with us first if

  • You take an antidepressant. A review of 1,816 reports of side effects found adaptogens involved in 9% of those reported alongside antidepressants, and it names Bacopa monnieri with agomelatine and moclobemide, including a heart attack with moclobemide (Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2023). We found no TGA advice either way, so this is a conversation to have with a person, not a web page.
  • You take prescription medicine of any kind. The same review explains that side effects can add together, and that the herb can affect the liver enzymes and transporters that clear many medicines from your body.
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding. We found no Australian position on brahmi in pregnancy, and no evidence of harm isn't the same as a green light.
  • You're thinking about brahmi for a child. Australia's permitted ingredients list sets no age limit for it (item 754) either way, and we found nothing to base an answer on.
  • If you take prescription medicine, check with your doctor, pharmacist or our naturopaths before you start.

Common questions

Are brahmi and bacopa the same thing?

Yes. Brahmi is the common name used in Australia for Bacopa monnieri, the herb's botanical name. Australian rules list it only under its botanical name (item 754 on Australia's permitted ingredients list, Schedule 1), so that's the name you'll find on the ingredient list. Brahmi on the front of the pack and Bacopa monnieri on the back are the same plant.

Is there an approved health claim for brahmi in Australia?

We found none. We checked the full list of permitted health claims, and none is linked to Bacopa monnieri, so there's no permitted health wording we can use for this herb. Being a permitted ingredient means brahmi can legally go into a listed medicine. It doesn't say what that medicine can claim, and it isn't a government endorsement of the herb.

Can I take brahmi with an antidepressant?

That's a question for your prescriber or pharmacist rather than a shop page. A 2023 review of 1,816 reports of side effects found adaptogens involved in 9% of those reported alongside antidepressants, and it names Bacopa monnieri with agomelatine and moclobemide. We found no TGA advice either way. Bring your list of medicines to us, your doctor or your pharmacist before you start.

Before you start

This list is the part of the page we will not shorten. If any of it applies to you, talk to one of our naturopaths or your doctor before starting.

  • Anyone on an antidepressant. A retrospective review of 1,816 adverse-event reports found 30 with a causal link to an adaptogen taken alongside an antidepressant, and it names Bacopa monnieri with agomelatine and moclobemide (Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2023).
  • Anyone on prescription medicine generally. That review puts the mechanism down to side effects adding together plus CYP and p-glycoprotein inhibition, which affects how many medicines are cleared.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. No Australian safety position for brahmi was found in our research pass, so it's unanswered rather than cleared.
  • Children. The Determination sets no age limit for item 754, and no paediatric evidence was gathered, so there's no basis for a dose or an age.
  • Anyone expecting the label to tell them what brahmi is for. It can't, because our research pass found no permitted indication tied to it.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Brahmi is permitted in Australian listed medicines under its botanical name. It sits in Schedule 1 of the Therapeutic Goods (Permissible Ingredients) Determination (No. 2) 2026 as item 754, BACOPA MONNIERI, permitted listed. The common name Brahmi has no Schedule 1 entry of its own. That's not a prohibition: it's the same plant, listed by its botanical name, so a label or formulation document should name it as Bacopa monnieri. No specific requirement, warning statement, maximum daily dose or route restriction is recorded against item 754. Being a permitted ingredient isn't TGA endorsement, and it doesn't create a claim. The permitted-indications cache, confirmed complete across Parts 1 to 17, returned no indication tied to Bacopa monnieri, so there's no TGA-permitted therapeutic wording available to cite for this family. Indications are indexed by wording rather than by ingredient, so a regulatory reviewer needs to confirm that against a listed AUST L brahmi product before publish.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 754.
