Iron
The mineral that carries oxygen around your body.
Iron helps your red blood cells deliver oxygen to every part of you. It's the most common nutrient shortfall there is, and women lose more of it than men.

Is Iron right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
How much actual iron is in an iron tablet?
Much less than the weight of the compound suggests. Ferrous fumarate is about 33 per cent iron by weight, ferrous sulfate 20 per cent and ferrous gluconate 12 per cent, so tablets that look the same can differ several times over. Australian labels show elemental iron separately, so compare that figure between products, not the milligrams of the salt.
Why does iron cause constipation?
Only part of a dose is absorbed, so the rest travels through your bowel, where it irritates the lining and changes your gut bacteria. A review of 43 trials in 6,831 adults found ferrous sulfate roughly doubled the odds of gut side effects compared with placebo. Dark stools are expected, but pain isn't.
Is it better to take iron every day or every second day?
Each dose raises hepcidin, the hormone that blocks absorption, for about a day afterwards. In women with low iron, taking it every second day led to higher total absorption than taking it on consecutive days: 21.8 per cent compared with 16.3 per cent. The right schedule depends on why you're taking it, so agree it with your doctor or our naturopaths.
Do I need a blood test before taking iron?
Yes. healthdirect says the only reliable way to tell if you're low in iron is an iron study blood test, and advises seeing a doctor before taking any iron supplement. Australian labs generally diagnose iron deficiency below 30 micrograms per litre of ferritin in adults. Your body can't get rid of extra iron.
