Evening Primrose Oil
Support for dry, tight skin.
Evening primrose oil gives you GLA, an omega-6 fat your skin uses and food barely provides. Dry skin is where it earns its place.

Is Evening Primrose Oil right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does evening primrose oil help sore breasts before a period?
That's what it's most famous for, and it's where the evidence is weakest. A meta-analysis of 13 trials in 1,752 women found no more pain relief than placebo, or than the creams and prescription treatments it was compared with. If it's the only thing you've tried, it's worth talking to someone about what else might help.
Can I take it to bring on labour?
No, and please don't. A meta-analysis of the trials found evening primrose oil taken by mouth made no difference to softening the cervix, and clinical reviews go further: its use in pregnancy isn't supported and should be avoided. Talk to your midwife or doctor about what's right for you instead.
Is evening primrose better than starflower or blackcurrant oil?
They all give you the same active ingredient, GLA, at different strengths, and starflower has the most per gram. No trial shows one of the three beats the others, so choose on GLA per capsule, capsule size and what your stomach is happy with. A blend isn't automatically better than a single oil.
I've heard it can cause seizures. Is that true?
That warning came from a couple of papers in the early 1980s. It was formally re-examined in 2007, and the authors concluded the link was unfounded, asking reference books to drop both the side effect and the warning. Many still include it. If you have epilepsy, check with your doctor rather than assuming either way.
