Is Spirulina right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is spirulina actually good for anything measurable?
The most consistent finding is for blood lipids. Across 20 studies in 1,076 adults, it lowered LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides. Weight came down by about 1.85 kg in people with overweight or obesity, though the trials varied a lot. Inflammation markers mostly didn't change. It isn't the cure-all some marketing suggests.
Should I worry about contamination?
It's still an open question in the research. Spirulina is grown in open ponds, and reviews report possible microcystins and other toxins depending on how it's grown. The practical answer is to buy from a supplier that tests each batch and publishes the results. We'd rather tell you that than pretend the question isn't there.
What's the difference between spirulina and chlorella?
They're different organisms with different rules. Spirulina is a blue-green alga (a cyanobacterium) with no special conditions on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1). Chlorella is a green alga that must list iodine as a component, and products taken by mouth are capped below 300 micrograms of iodine a day. If you have a thyroid concern, that difference matters.
