With marine collagen the first question is not about absorption at all. It is whether you can safely eat fish, and our naturopaths ask that before anything else.

A good fit if

• You eat fish comfortably and want a collagen source that is not cattle-derived
• You are pescatarian, or you avoid beef and pork on religious, cultural or ethical grounds
• You want almost entirely type I collagen rather than a types I and III mix
• Sustainability matters to you and you are willing to look for a certifying mark rather than take the word 'sustainable' at face value
• You are prepared to judge it over eight to twelve weeks, the window the published trials used

Check with us first if

• You have had a reaction to fish that was never formally diagnosed. Marine collagen is not the place to find out, and allergy testing comes first.
• You keep halal or kosher. Fish sourcing is usually simpler than bovine, but certification still covers the processing chain and only a mark on the pack establishes it.
• Kidney disease or a prescribed protein restriction. A 10 g daily serve is a meaningful protein load.
• Pregnant or breastfeeding. Collagen itself is a food-type protein, but marine beauty blends commonly add herbs, vitamins and minerals that need checking as a whole formula.

• Fish skin collagen, unflavoured peptides. Best known for: The plainest marine tub. One ingredient, and the format most trials used. Absorption: Hydrolysed to short peptides that disperse in cold water without gelling. Typical use: Stirred into water, coffee or a smoothie. Sold in tubs and dosed by scoop.
• Fish scale and bone collagen. Best known for: Using the mineralised by-product rather than skin, which is the sustainability argument for marine collagen. Absorption: Same peptide once hydrolysed; the difference is upstream, in extraction yield and mineral removal. Typical use: Rarely stated on a label. If sourcing matters to you, ask the brand which tissue was used.
• Wild-caught single-species marine collagen. Best known for: Naming the fish. North Atlantic cod is the most common single-species claim in Australia. Absorption: No difference attributable to species in the finished peptide. Typical use: Bought by people who want traceability. It is also the claim to look for if you avoid farmed fish.
• Sustainability-certified marine collagen. Best known for: Third-party certification of the fishery or the upcycled by-product stream, not of the collagen's effect. Absorption: Identical. Certification is a supply-chain audit, not a formulation change. Typical use: Look for the certifying body's mark. 'Sustainable' with no mark behind it means little.
• Marine collagen with vitamin C and cofactors. Best known for: Collagen at a lower per-serve dose alongside vitamin C, zinc or silica in a flavoured powder. Absorption: The collagen behaves the same; vitamin C matters because the body needs it to build its own collagen. Typical use: Check the collagen milligrams per serve rather than the tub size.
• Single-serve marine collagen sachets. Best known for: A fixed dose you cannot mis-scoop, and the format that made marine collagen a mainstream Australian purchase. Absorption: No different from the same powder out of a tub. Typical use: Convenience and travel. Cost per gram is usually the highest in the category.

Reference values. None. Collagen is not an essential nutrient, so the NHMRC sets no Nutrient Reference Value for it, and there is no separate figure for marine collagen. The reference values that matter around it, protein and vitamin C, are set out on the collagen entry.

Typical supplemental range. Trials of fish collagen peptides have generally used around 10 g a day for eight to twelve weeks. Australian marine products span a wide range against that: bulk unflavoured tubs are scooped at roughly that scale, while single-serve sachets and flavoured beauty blends are often dosed well below it, with the balance of the sachet made up of flavour and cofactors.

Upper level. None set, by the NHMRC or in the Determination. The practical ceiling is the same as for any collagen. A 10 g serve is a real protein load and counts inside your daily protein rather than outside it.
