Is Astragalus right for you?
Common questions
Is astragalus allowed in Australian supplements?
Yes. Astragalus adsurgens is on Australia's permitted ingredients list (item 728 in Schedule 1), so it can be used in listed medicines. Related species, including Astragalus membranaceus, are on the list under their own names too. Being permitted means it can be used in a listed medicine. It doesn't mean the government has approved any product or any claim made for it.
Why doesn't this page say what astragalus does?
Because so far, the evidence we have for astragalus only confirms it's a permitted ingredient. We don't have a permitted health claim to match it, or a study we'd be comfortable building a claim on. We'd rather tell you that plainly than borrow a claim from somewhere else. If you'd like to know whether it suits you, our naturopaths can talk it through with you.
