How the forms compare
Common questions
Is ashwagandha safe?
Most people tolerate standardised root extract well, and side effects in trials are usually mild, such as nausea, loose stools, headache or drowsiness. Liver injury is rare but real, and the TGA has issued safety advisories about it. Avoid ashwagandha if you've ever had liver problems, and stop if you notice yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice).
What is the difference between KSM-66 and Sensoril ashwagandha?
They're both standardised extracts, made from different parts of the plant. KSM-66 is a root-only, water-based extract standardised to at least five per cent withanolides, and it's the one used in most published trials. Sensoril is made from root and leaf and standardised differently, so the two aren't interchangeable milligram for milligram.
How much ashwagandha is typically taken?
Australian labels usually provide 150 to 600 milligrams of standardised root extract a day, and clinical trials most often used 300 to 600 milligrams for six to twelve weeks. Whole-root powders are measured in teaspoons instead. What you need depends on your age, diet and health, so talk to one of our naturopaths.
Who should not take ashwagandha?
Avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding (Australian withania medicines generally carry a pregnancy warning) or have liver problems. The NIH also advises against it with autoimmune conditions, hormone-sensitive prostate cancer, or before surgery. Check with us first if you have a thyroid condition or take prescription medicines.
