Description
Switch Nutrition Citrulline Malate is a single-ingredient, unflavoured powder of citrulline malate in the 2:1 ratio, which is two parts L-citrulline to one part malic acid. Citrulline is a non-protein amino acid found naturally in watermelon, and the 2:1 form is the one most commonly used in sports nutrition because both halves are physiologically active. It comes as the 300 g tub, which is 100 serves at the labelled 3 g scoop.
Product Strengths
- Sets the citrulline amount in a pre-training drink rather than accepting a blend's.
- One ingredient only: 100 per cent pure citrulline malate in the 2:1 ratio.
- 3000 mg of citrulline malate in every 3 g scoop.
- Unflavoured, so it stacks into a pre-workout, an amino drink or plain water.
- No artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners.
- 100 serves in the 300 g tub.
Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: Active adults and athletes.
Not suitable for: Anyone with an allergy to the listed ingredients; Pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless advised by a health professional.
Suggested Use
Mix 1 scoop (3 g) with a glass of water, into your pre-workout, or first thing in the morning. Switch Nutrition also publishes a 5 g serving suggestion on its directions, which is more than one level scoop, so read the tub and follow the directions on the pack you receive.

L-Citrulline
Citrulline, pure and simple.
Your body uses L-citrulline to make the signal that tells your blood vessels to widen. With nothing bonded to it, the number on the label is exactly the citrulline you get.

Is L-Citrulline right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is L-citrulline better than citrulline malate?
Not on the evidence we have. They've been tested head to head twice. In one trial, 43 trained adults took citrulline with or without malate, and neither beat placebo. In a 6-week trial, researchers found no clear difference between 8 g of L-citrulline and 12 g of citrulline malate. The real difference is dosing: with L-citrulline, the label weight is the citrulline you get.
How much L-citrulline matches 8 g of citrulline malate?
About 5.3 g, if the citrulline malate is a 2:1 product. At a 1:1 ratio, it's closer to 4 g. That's why 8 g of citrulline malate and 8 g of L-citrulline aren't the same dose. If a citrulline malate label doesn't state its ratio, you can't convert it at all, which is the main reason people choose the pure form instead.
Why take L-citrulline instead of L-arginine?
Because most of the arginine you swallow is broken down in your gut and liver before it reaches your blood. Citrulline gets past that, and your kidneys turn it into arginine afterwards. So L-citrulline by mouth raises blood arginine more reliably than arginine does. In Australia, arginine is also only permitted in listed medicines applied to the skin, not ones you swallow.
