Fish Oil
Fish oil, and the number that actually matters.
What's printed on the front is usually the oil weight. What counts is the EPA and DHA figure on the back. That varies enormously between a standard capsule and a concentrate, and it's the only way to compare two products honestly.

Is this the right omega-3 for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does fish oil contain mercury?
Methylmercury binds to protein in fish flesh rather than to the fat, and what remains is stripped out during refining. The US National Institutes of Health states that omega-3 supplements have not been found to contain this contaminant because it is removed during processing and purification. Whole fish is a different question from fish oil.
What is the difference between fish oil, krill oil and algal oil?
They differ by source and by how the omega-3 is carried. Fish oil is pressed from oily fish flesh and carries EPA and DHA as triglycerides. Krill oil is from a crustacean and carries them partly as phospholipids, at much smaller doses. Algal oil is grown from microalgae, contains no seafood, and is DHA-dominant.
How can you tell if a fish oil is fresh?
By taste and smell first. Fresh marine oil is mild; a sharp, paint-like or strongly fishy oil has oxidised. Laboratory measures exist, peroxide value, anisidine value and their combination, TOTOX, and independent testing programmes publish them by batch. A best-before date on its own does not predict oxidation.
Why does fish oil make you burp, and does enteric coating help?
The repeat happens when the softgel opens in the stomach and the oil floats on the meal. Taking it mid-meal, splitting the dose and refrigerating capsules all help. Enteric coatings are designed to delay release until past the stomach, which addresses the cause directly, though the published comparative evidence is thin.
