Flaxseed
Flaxseed, the nutty seed for your everyday kitchen.
Also known as linseed, it comes whole, ground into a meal, or pressed for oil. Whole seed keeps longer in the cupboard, and the meal stirs straight into porridge, smoothies and batters.

Is Flaxseed right for you?
Common questions
Is flaxseed the same thing as linseed?
Yes. They're two names for the same seed from the same plant, Linum usitatissimum. Flaxseed is the name you'll see more often on food packs, and linseed is the older British name, which is also the one Australia's medicine rules use. Whatever the pack says, and whether it's brown or golden, it's the same seed.
Is flaxseed regulated as a medicine in Australia?
Not when it's sold as food. Flax is a permitted ingredient in listed medicines under its botanical and linseed names (items 3052 to 3056 on Australia's permitted ingredients list). But whole seed, meal and oil sold as food come under food standards instead. There's no permitted health claim listed for flax or linseed, so there's no TGA-permitted wording to quote.
