Description
Springfields Marjoram is a steam-distilled essential oil with a warm, woody, gently spicy herbaceous aroma that sits as a middle note in a blend. It is an oil for massage blends, and it may have a mild sedative effect, so use it with care. It is the 10 mL bottle from the Springfields 100% Pure Essential Oils range. It is used by the drop in a diffuser or diluted into a carrier oil for massage, where the warm herbaceous note sits between the sharper green herbs and the sweeter woods in a blend.
Product Strengths
- Marjoram is traditionally used in aromatherapy as a warming, comforting note in an evening massage blend.
- A single-species essential oil, not a blend and not a synthetic fragrance oil.
- Warm, woody, spicy and herbaceous aroma; a middle note that anchors a blend.
- Steam distilled from the flowering tops, the traditional method for this oil.
- It carries basil, bergamot, black pepper, chamomile, cedarwood, clary sage, cypress, eucalyptus, fennel, juniper, lavender, peppermint, rosemary, thyme and the citrus oils as blend partners.
- Part of the Springfields Australian aromatherapy range.
Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: General household use.
Not suitable for: Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Botanical Source
Botanical name Origanum majorana, sweet marjoram. Plant part: the flowering tops, leaves and flowers. Extraction: steam distillation. The botanical name here comes from the label, and no country of origin is declared. That matters, because sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) and Spanish marjoram (Thymus mastichina) are different plants with different safety profiles, and the reference works advise checking the botanical name on the bottle before use.
How to Use
Add a few drops to a diffuser or vaporiser to scent a room. For massage or any other skin contact, dilute the oil first in a carrier oil such as sweet almond, jojoba or grapeseed; the usual guidance for adults is 1 to 3 per cent, which is roughly 1 to 3 drops of essential oil in 5 mL of carrier oil. For a bath, blend the drops into a dispersant or a carrier oil first rather than dropping them straight onto the water.
Safety
The maker's own caution: Springfields states that marjoram may have a mild sedative effect and should be used with care, and Go Vita's current listing adds that this is a reason to be careful with it during the day. Take that into account before using it while driving, operating machinery or doing anything else that needs full alertness.
Pregnancy, and the references disagree. Marjoram is one of the oils traditionally avoided in pregnancy, and published guidance genuinely differs, so here is what each says. The International Federation of Aromatherapists lists sweet marjoram, Origanum majorana, among the oils contraindicated in pregnancy. The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists takes the opposite view and places sweet marjoram in its list of oils that may be used safely throughout pregnancy. Tisserand and Young, as summarised by AromaWeb, indicate no special precautions for sweet marjoram. Springfields itself publishes no pregnancy statement for this oil. Given that spread of opinion, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use this oil without advice from your midwife, doctor or a qualified aromatherapy practitioner.
- Not for internal use unless under qualified supervision.
- Always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact. Never apply the neat oil.
- Patch test on a small area of skin and wait 24 hours before wider use.
- Keep away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Keep away from open flame, sparks and heat sources. Essential oils are flammable.
- If you are under medical care or using essential oils with children, seek advice from a qualified practitioner first.
Storage
Store tightly capped in the original bottle, upright, away from heat and out of direct sunlight.
