Description
Springfields Mandarin is a single-species essential oil taken from the peel of the mandarin, Citrus reticulata. It is the sweetest of the citrus oils, with a soft citrus aroma carrying fruity notes, and it suits a diffuser or, blended with a dispersant, the bath. It is the 10 mL bottle from the Springfields 100% Pure Essential Oils range.
Product Strengths
- Mandarin is traditionally used in aromatherapy as a comforting citrus scent for an evening blend.
- A single-species essential oil, not a blend and not a synthetic fragrance oil.
- Soft, sweet citrus aroma with fruity notes; the gentlest-smelling of the citrus oils in the range.
- A top note that sits easily alongside the florals and the other citrus oils in a blend.
- Expressed from the peel, so the aroma stays close to the fresh fruit.
- Part of the Springfields Australian aromatherapy range.
Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: General household use.
Not suitable for: Pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless advised by a health professional.
Botanical Source
Botanical name Citrus reticulata, which some aromatherapy references list under the synonym Citrus nobilis. Plant part: the fruit peel. Extraction: cold expression of the peel, which is the standard method for mandarin oil. Neither the extraction method nor the country of origin is declared for this oil.
How to Use
Add a few drops to a diffuser or vaporiser to scent a room. For any skin contact, dilute the oil first in a carrier oil such as sweet almond, jojoba or grapeseed; the usual guidance for adults is 1 to 3 per cent, which is roughly 1 to 3 drops of essential oil in 5 mL of carrier oil. For a bath, blend the drops into a dispersant or a carrier oil first rather than dropping them straight onto the water. If you use it in a room where children are present, keep the diffuser itself well out of their reach.
Safety
Cold-pressed citrus oil, so treat it as sun-sensitising. Keep skin that has been treated with it out of direct sunlight and off sunbeds for at least 12 hours afterwards. To be straight about what the references say: the standard aromatherapy safety literature does not classify mandarin peel oil as phototoxic, unlike cold-pressed lime or bergamot, and the International Federation of Aromatherapists lists mandarin only for dermal sensitisation if the oil has oxidised. The 12-hour caution here is the precaution common to all cold-pressed citrus oils, not a hazard the references attribute specifically to mandarin. Springfields does not offer a bergapten-free (FCF) grade of mandarin, or of any citrus oil in its current catalogue.
- Not for internal use unless under qualified supervision.
- Always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact. Never apply the neat oil.
- Patch test on a small area of skin and wait 24 hours before wider use.
- Keep away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Keep away from open flame, sparks and heat sources. Essential oils are flammable.
- Citrus oils oxidise with age, and an oxidised mandarin oil is more likely to sensitise skin. Replace the bottle once the aroma has dulled.
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or using essential oils with children or anyone under medical care, seek advice from a qualified aromatherapy practitioner first.
Storage
Store tightly capped in the original bottle, upright, away from heat and out of direct sunlight. Citrus oils are the shortest-lived of the essential oils, so keeping the bottle cool and firmly closed matters.
