Description
Springfields Cypress is a 100 per cent pure cypress essential oil with a fresh, clean, woody aroma and a distinctly coniferous, slightly herbaceous edge. It is used in aromatherapy blends for both the mind and the body. It is a useful grounding note in a blend and works well in a diffuser or in a massage oil. It is used in a diffuser or diluted into a carrier oil for massage, and its dry coniferous note is the reason it turns up in aftershave-style blends and in footbaths.
Product Strengths
- Cypress is traditionally used in aromatherapy as a clean, clearing forest note.
- 100 per cent pure cypress essential oil, with nothing blended in or extended.
- Fresh, herbaceous, woody and coniferous aroma that gives a blend structure without dominating it.
- Steam distilled from the needles and twigs of the tree.
- Springfields applies a testing protocol intended to confirm the oil is pure and unadulterated.
- Australian owned company, bottled in Australia.
- 10 mL bottle.
Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: General household use.
Not suitable for: Pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless advised by a health professional.
Botanical Source
Cupressus sempervirens, the Mediterranean or Italian cypress, steam distilled from the needles and young twigs. The species and plant part follow the pack, and agree with the standard aromatherapy references for trade cypress oil, which list Cupressus sempervirens, needles, steam distilled. The growing origin of the crop is not declared.
How to Use
Diffuser: add around 6 to 8 drops to the water in an ultrasonic diffuser. Massage: Springfields' general guidance for its oils is around 6 drops to 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil or unscented cream. Bath: blend around 6 drops with 6 drops of a dispersant before adding to warm water, never neat. Confirm directions from the product label.
Safety
- For external use only. Not to be taken, and not for internal use unless under qualified supervision.
- Always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact. The usual working range for an adult is 1 to 3 per cent, which is roughly 1 to 3 drops in 5ml of carrier oil.
- Patch test on a small area of skin before wider use.
- Keep away from the eyes and mucous membranes, and do not apply to broken or damaged skin.
- Oxidation matters with this oil. Tisserand and Young, as reported by AromaWeb, list no known hazards for cypress but advise against applying the oil to the skin once it has oxidised, because skin sensitisation becomes more likely. Buy a size you will use, keep the bottle closed and replace it once the aroma turns sharp or turpentine-like.
- Pregnancy: cypress is often listed among oils to avoid, but the standard references do not support a blanket rule. Tisserand and Young record no known hazards for Cupressus sempervirens. The Aromatic Studies pregnancy guidance contraindicates blue cypress, a different plant, while treating ordinary cypress as suitable for use in pregnancy. Springfields prints no pregnancy warning on this pack. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, use essential oils only under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Essential oils are flammable. Keep away from open flame and heat sources.
Storage
Store below 30 degrees Celsius in a dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap firmly closed. Cypress is rich in monoterpenes and oxidises with air and warmth, so a tightly closed bottle in a cool dark place genuinely extends its life.
