Description
Springfields Clove Bud is a 100 per cent pure clove bud essential oil, steam distilled from the dried flower buds of the clove tree. The aroma is rich, warm, sweet and distinctly spicy, and it behaves as a base note that anchors a blend. It is a warming, comforting aroma to diffuse through the home. It is a potent oil and a very small amount goes a long way. One or two drops in a diffuser is the usual way to use it, most often through the colder months, when a sweet spice note is wanted in a room.
Product Strengths
- Traditionally used in aromatherapy as a warming, comforting aroma to diffuse through the home.
- 100 per cent pure clove bud essential oil, with nothing blended in or extended.
- Distilled from the flower buds rather than the leaf or the stem, the grade generally preferred in aromatherapy.
- Rich, warm, sweet and spicy aroma that sits as a base note in a blend.
- Springfields applies a testing protocol intended to confirm the oil is pure and unadulterated.
- Australian owned company, bottled in Australia, with no animal ingredients.
- 5ml bottle, and the oil is strong enough that this size lasts.
Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: General household use.
Not suitable for: Pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless advised by a health professional.
Botanical Source
Syzygium aromaticum, the clove tree, steam distilled from the dried flower buds. The same species is catalogued under the synonym Eugenia caryophyllus, which is the name that appears on the cosmetic ingredient listing for this oil. Springfields is Australian owned and bottles in Australia; the growing origin of the clove crop itself is not declared, so we do not state one.
How to Use
Diffuser: add around 6 drops to the water in an ultrasonic diffuser. On the skin, clove bud must always be diluted into a carrier oil first, and at a much lower rate than most essential oils, so read the Safety section below before any skin use. Confirm directions from the product label.
Safety
- Clove bud is a strong dermal irritant and needs a lower dilution than most oils. Its main constituent, eugenol, is a phenol. The Tisserand Institute, citing Essential Oil Safety second edition, gives a recommended topical maximum of 0.5 per cent for clove bud oil, well under the 1 to 3 per cent that suits most essential oils. Springfields' own retail labelling states that it may irritate sensitive skin and must be diluted before skin application.
- Never apply undiluted to the skin, and never add it neat to a bath. Always blend it into a carrier oil first.
- Patch test on a small area of skin before any wider use.
- For external use only. Not to be taken, and not for internal use unless under qualified supervision.
- Keep away from the eyes and mucous membranes. Do not apply to broken or damaged skin.
- Discontinue use if irritation or sensitivity occurs.
- Pregnancy: the published guidance is not unanimous, and Springfields prints no pregnancy warning on this pack. Clove appears on the standard aromatherapy lists of oils to avoid in pregnancy, for instance the Aromatic Studies pregnancy list, which groups it with the high-phenol oils. The UK Teratology Information Service takes a more measured position: it notes that clove oil has not been formally studied in pregnancy, and that the small number of reports of women using it carried no suggestion of harm, while stressing that an absence of reported harm is not proof of safety. Given that disagreement, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your healthcare practitioner before using this oil.
- One Australian retailer's transcription of the Springfields label states the oil is not to be used in children under 2 years of age. Keep out of reach of children in any case.
- Essential oils are flammable. Keep away from open flame and heat sources.
Storage
Store below 30 degrees Celsius in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the cap firmly closed between uses.
