Description
Springfields Black Pepper is a 100 per cent pure essential oil steam distilled from the peppercorns of Piper nigrum, the same vine that supplies the kitchen spice. The aroma is fresh and dry-woody, warm and unmistakably peppery, but far softer than a pepper grinder suggests. It sits as a middle note, so it forms the body of a blend rather than its opening. It is a common choice for a sports massage blend. The 10 mL amber bottle is an aromatherapy and home fragrance product, not a medicine.
Product Strengths
- Black pepper is traditionally used in aromatherapy as a warming, reviving spice note in a massage blend.
- Single, undiluted oil: 100 per cent Piper nigrum essential oil, with no carrier, diluent or synthetic aroma chemical added.
- A warming middle note that gives structure to a massage blend and stops a citrus or herbal top note from evaporating into thin air.
- Unusually wide blending range: bergamot, clary sage, fennel, frankincense, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, lavender, juniper, lemon, lemongrass, lime, mandarin, marjoram, myrrh, orange, palmarosa, rosemary, sage, sandalwood, tea tree and ylang ylang.
- A spice note without sweetness, which is what makes it work in masculine and unisex blends where cinnamon or clove would read as dessert.
- Purity guaranteed by Springfields' batch testing protocol, which checks each batch for adulteration before bottling.
Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: General household use.
Not suitable for: Pregnant or breastfeeding women, unless advised by a health professional.
Botanical Source
Botanical name: Piper nigrum, the black pepper vine, a perennial climber native to southern India.
Plant part: the dried fruit, the peppercorn. Descriptions of the plant part vary between the berry and the seeds. Both refer to the same dried peppercorn.
Extraction method: steam distillation.
Country of origin: not declared for this oil.
How to Use
- Massage or body blend: mix around 6 drops into 12mL of a base oil such as sweet almond, or into an unscented jojoba cream. This is the classic use for the oil and the one Springfields lead with.
- Diffuser: add around 6 drops to the water of an ultrasonic diffuser. Use a light hand, because pepper is assertive in a small room.
- Dilution: for adult skin contact, dilute to 1 to 3 per cent in a carrier oil. As a guide, 1 per cent is roughly 1 drop per 5mL of carrier. Stay at the lower end for this oil.
- Bath: this oil must not be used undiluted in baths. Mix it into a dispersant or a tablespoon of carrier oil first.
Safety
- Not for internal use unless under the supervision of a suitably qualified practitioner. Springfields state: do not take internally.
- Always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact, at 1 to 3 per cent for adults, and prefer the lower end. Springfields warn it may irritate sensitive skin, and warming spice oils are more likely than most to feel hot on skin at higher concentrations.
- Do not use undiluted in baths. This is a specific published warning for this oil, not general advice.
- Patch test first. Apply the diluted blend to a small area of inner forearm and leave 24 hours before wider use. Discontinue if a rash or irritation develops.
- Keep away from the eyes and all mucous membranes, and do not use on broken or damaged skin.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets. Springfields publish no pregnancy precaution for this oil, and black pepper is not among the oils the standard aromatherapy references single out for pregnancy avoidance, but if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with a qualified practitioner before use.
- Flammable. Keep away from naked flame, candles, heaters and other ignition sources.
Storage
Store tightly capped in the original amber glass bottle, upright, in a cool, dark, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep away from plastics and polished surfaces, because undiluted essential oil can mark them.
Disclaimer
This is a pure essential oil sold for aromatherapy and home fragrance use. It is not a therapeutic good and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or condition. For external use only after dilution. Always read the label and follow the directions for use. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.
