Description
Springfields Bergamot is a 100 per cent pure, certified organic essential oil cold pressed from the peel of the bergamot fruit, Citrus aurantium ssp bergamia. The aroma is light and fresh, a sweet citrus with a soft floral overtone and a faintly spicy edge. Most people know it already, because it is the scent that makes Earl Grey tea smell like Earl Grey. It is a top note. The oil carries ACO certification, which means organic principles were maintained from the farm through to the finished product. The 10 mL amber bottle is an aromatherapy and home fragrance product, not a medicine. A few drops in a diffuser is the everyday use, and in blending it is the citrus that rounds off sharper notes, sitting easily with lavender, geranium and the soft woods.

Botanical Source
Botanical name: Citrus aurantium ssp bergamia, the bergamot orange, grown principally in Calabria in southern Italy. The name is printed as Citrus Auranium ssp bergamia, and the older synonym Citrus bergamia is also in use.
Plant part: the fruit peel.
Extraction method: cold pressed, also described as cold expression.
Grade: this is the standard cold pressed oil. The ingredient statement names the whole cold pressed oil, not an FCF or bergapten free grade, so treat it as containing bergapten and therefore as phototoxic.
Country of origin: not declared for this oil.
How to Use
- Diffuser: add around 6 drops to the water of an ultrasonic diffuser. Diffusion carries no phototoxicity risk, because nothing reaches the skin.
- Massage or body blend: mix around 6 drops into 12mL of base oil or unscented jojoba cream, and then observe the sunlight caution below.
- Bath: mix around 6 drops with 6 drops of dispersant before adding to warm water. Never drop neat oil into a bath.
- Dilution: for adult skin contact, dilute to 1 to 3 per cent in a carrier oil. As a guide, 1 per cent is roughly 1 drop per 5mL of carrier.
Safety
- Phototoxic. This is the important one. Cold pressed bergamot contains bergapten, a furanocoumarin, and this product is not the bergapten-free FCF grade. Springfields' own caution reads: topical application may increase sensitivity to sunlight and UV light. Keep skin that has been treated with the diluted oil out of direct sunlight and off sunbeds for at least 12 hours afterwards.
- Not for internal use unless under the supervision of a suitably qualified practitioner. Springfields state: do not take internally.
- Always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact, at 1 to 3 per cent for adults. Springfields warn it may be irritating to sensitive skin.
- Patch test first. Apply the diluted blend to a small area of inner forearm and leave 24 hours before wider use. Discontinue if a rash or irritation develops.
- Keep away from the eyes and all mucous membranes, and do not use on broken or damaged skin.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Flammable. Keep away from naked flame, candles, heaters and other ignition sources.
Storage
Store tightly capped in the original amber glass bottle, upright, in a cool, dark, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Cold pressed citrus oils have a shorter shelf life than distilled oils and oxidise faster once opened, so keep the cap firmly closed and use within a reasonable time. Keep away from plastics and polished surfaces, because undiluted essential oil can mark them.
