Description
Springfields Basil is a 100 per cent pure essential oil steam distilled from the leaves of Ocimum basilicum. The aroma is strongly herbal, sharp and warm, with a peppery edge and a clear aniseed-like sweetness underneath. It sits as a top note, so it announces itself first in a blend and then gives way. It is a work and study companion, and it blends well with citrus oils. The 10 mL amber bottle is an aromatherapy and home fragrance product, not a medicine. It is diffused a drop or two at a time, usually into a citrus blend rather than on its own, where it is the note that keeps a sweet mix from turning cloying.
Product Strengths
- Basil is traditionally used in aromatherapy as a clearing, freshening herb note in a diffuser blend.
- Single, undiluted oil: 100 per cent Ocimum basilicum essential oil with no carrier, diluent or synthetic aroma chemical added.
- Leaf distilled: taken from the leaves rather than the flowering tops.
- A crisp, green top note that lifts a heavy blend without adding sweetness, which is why it is so often paired with citrus.
- Quality and purity guaranteed by Springfields, whose testing protocol checks each batch for adulteration before bottling.
- Wide blending range: bergamot, black pepper, cedarwood, clary sage, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, juniper, lemon, niaouli, orange, palmarosa, rosemary, sage and thyme.
Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: General household use.
Not suitable for: Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Botanical Source
Botanical name: Ocimum basilicum, sweet basil, an annual herb of the mint family.
Plant part: the leaves.
Extraction method: steam distillation.
Country of origin: not declared for this oil. The chemotype is also not declared, which matters because basil oils vary widely in their methyl chavicol content.
How to Use
- Diffuser: add around 6 drops to the water of an ultrasonic diffuser in a well ventilated room. This is the method Springfields lean on for a work or study space.
- Massage or body blend: mix roughly 6 drops into 12mL of a base oil such as sweet almond, or into an unscented jojoba cream.
- Dilution: for adult skin contact, dilute to 1 to 3 per cent in a carrier oil. As a guide, 1 per cent is roughly 1 drop per 5mL of carrier. Essential oils should always be blended with a base oil before being applied to the body.
- Bath: never drop neat oil into bathwater. Mix with a dispersant or a tablespoon of carrier oil first.
Safety
- Not to be used in pregnancy. This is the supplier's own printed precaution. Basil is also one of the oils the standard aromatherapy references list as traditionally avoided in pregnancy, the concern centring on the methyl chavicol, or estragole, content, which varies considerably between basil chemotypes. the chemotype of this oil is not declared, so the cautious reading applies. Avoid while breastfeeding as well unless a qualified practitioner advises otherwise.
- Not for internal use unless under the supervision of a suitably qualified practitioner. Springfields state: do not take internally.
- Always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact, at 1 to 3 per cent for adults. Springfields warn that this oil may irritate sensitive skin if used undiluted.
- Patch test first. Apply the diluted blend to a small area of inner forearm and leave 24 hours. Discontinue if a rash or irritation develops.
- Keep away from the eyes and all mucous membranes, and do not use on broken or damaged skin.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Flammable. Keep away from naked flame, candles, heaters and other ignition sources.
Storage
Store tightly capped in the original amber glass bottle, upright, in a cool, dark, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep away from plastics and polished surfaces, because undiluted essential oil can mark them.
