Shark Cartilage
What is shark cartilage?
Shark cartilage is cartilage from sharks, dried and powdered, and it comes as capsules, tablets and powder. If joints are your reason for looking, our naturopaths can also show you chondroitin, the part of cartilage with its own joint research.

Is Shark Cartilage right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does shark cartilage help your joints?
We can't tell you it does, because we couldn't find a single clinical trial of shark cartilage for joints, cartilage or osteoarthritis. Australian rules do include joint wording, and the two claims about cartilage need scientific evidence behind them. That evidence isn't there yet. The idea that eating cartilage helps your cartilage is appealing, but it's not a finding. If joints are why you're looking, try chondroitin. It's a purified part of cartilage with its own research, and it doesn't carry the shark cartilage warning.
Why does shark cartilage have such a long warning on the label?
Because of what it's been shown to do in people. In a placebo-controlled study of 29 healthy men, a liquid shark cartilage extract taken by mouth slowed the growth of new blood vessels into a small wound implanted in the arm. New blood vessels are what your body needs after surgery or an accident, after a heart attack, to build a placenta in pregnancy, and to grow as a child. So the label names every one of those groups. It's not general caution. It's a list that follows from how the extract behaves.
Is shark cartilage safe?
For most adults outside the groups named in the warning, the known problems are digestive. In one trial, 12 of 49 people had stomach side effects, mostly nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, wind and constipation. In another, 5 of 47 stopped because they couldn't tolerate it. A review of side effects in seriously ill patients also named raised blood calcium from shark cartilage products. And there's one open question: a review of BMAA, a toxin made by blue-green algae, found more of it in shark cartilage than in most fish. Its authors say the health risk is hard to assess with confidence.
