Lutein
The golden pigment in your greens and eggs.
Lutein is the yellow-orange colour in leafy greens, corn and egg yolks, so you've been eating it all along. You'll find it blended into eye formulas, and used as a colouring in medicines.

Is Lutein right for you?
Common questions
Why is lutein listed as a colour in Australian medicines?
Because that's the use Australia's permitted ingredients list covers. Item 3096 allows lutein as a colouring in medicines taken by mouth or applied to the skin. It's used as an excipient, the part of a medicine that isn't the active ingredient. That listing doesn't make lutein an active ingredient in its own right, and it comes with no permitted health claim. As a supplement ingredient and as a colouring, it's doing two different jobs, so the label is worth a look.
Is lutein in everyday food?
Yes. It's one of the pigments in leafy green vegetables, corn and egg yolks, and it's part of what gives a cooked yolk its deep yellow. Foods like these are covered by the Food Standards Code rather than the medicines rules. We don't have a reliable per-serve figure for lutein, so we haven't quoted one.
