Description
Spiral Umeboshi Plums are whole ume plums pickled in sea salt with shiso leaves and sun dried over the hottest days of summer, the traditional Japanese pickle, in a 150 g pack. They are intensely sour and very salty, so a small piece at a time is all you need. Tuck one into a rice ball or a bowl of rice, chop it through dressings and sauces, mash it with a little water over steamed greens, or add it to a broth.
Product Strengths
- A traditional Japanese pickle for rice, rice balls, dressings and broths.
- Intensely sour and salty, so a small piece seasons a whole bowl.
- Three ingredients: ume plum, sea salt and pickled shiso.
- Ume plum makes up 69.6% of the pack.
- The red colour comes from the shiso leaves.
- 150 g pack.
Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: Japanese and macrobiotic cooking; rice dishes, dressings and broths; anyone buying organic pantry staples.
Not suitable for: Anyone with an allergy to the listed ingredients; anyone on a sodium restricted diet, because these are salt pickled and very high in sodium; eating in quantity, since the plums are a seasoning rather than a snack. The plums contain stones, so take care when serving them to children.
Ingredients
- Organic ume plum (69.6%).
- Sea salt.
- Pickled shiso (shiso leaf, salt).
Nutrition Information
These are salt pickled and very high in sodium. Read the sodium figure and the rest of the nutrition panel from the pack.
Suggested Use
Use a quarter to half a plum at a time. Stone and chop one through a salad dressing or a dipping sauce, tuck a piece into an onigiri rice ball, mash a little with water and spoon it over steamed greens, or drop one into a broth or a pot of rice as it cooks. Taste before adding any further salt.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and keep the pack closed. Follow any storage direction printed on the pack, including any direction to refrigerate after opening.
