Calc Phos

What is Calc Phos traditionally used for?

In the tissue salt tradition, Calc Phos is linked with teeth, teething and bones. It's No. 2 of the twelve Schuessler tissue salts, calcium phosphate made up at 6X.

See what we checked

Is this the right tissue salts for you?

Calc Phos is a traditional product with a name that sounds like a nutrient, so these are the questions our naturopaths ask in store before you buy it.

A good fit if

  • You're following the tissue salt tradition and No. 2 is the salt you're after
  • You understand it's traditional use and not a calcium supplement
  • You want the spray because you're avoiding lactose

Check with us first if

  • It's for a baby or young child. There's no safety data for tissue salts in children beyond teething studies with very low certainty.
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding. There's no specific evidence either way.
  • You're avoiding lactose, which most tablets are made with, or you're managing your blood sugar or tooth decay, because some tablets use sucrose.
  • You already take a calcium supplement and want to know how the two differ.

How the forms compare

  • Calc Phos 6X tablets. Best known for: The standard retail form, at the potency Schüssler used. Absorption: Not applicable; there's no nutritional dose of calcium to absorb. Typical use: Let it dissolve on your tongue, following the pack directions.
  • Calc Phos oral spray. Best known for: A liquid carrier instead of a lactose tablet. Absorption: Not applicable at 6X. Typical use: If you're avoiding lactose, or for children who won't take a tablet.
  • Combination tissue salt formulas. Best known for: Several salts in one tablet, sold for a named concern. Absorption: Not applicable at 6X. Typical use: Whatever that product's own AUST L indication says.
  • A calcium supplement instead. Best known for: A measured milligram dose of calcium. Absorption: Well studied, and how much you absorb depends on the dose. Typical use: When you're genuinely not getting enough calcium.

Common questions

Is Calc Phos a calcium supplement?

No. It's calcium phosphate prepared at 6X, the sixth step of a one-in-ten dilution, which leaves no meaningful amount of the mineral in the tablet. That's not a calcium dose. If you're worried about calcium for yourself or a child, a calcium supplement gives you milligrams you can count, and it's the one with trial evidence behind it.

Can I use Calc Phos for my teething baby?

Calc Phos is the tissue salt traditionally linked with teething, and Schüssler wrote that it "hastens dentition". The research doesn't back that up yet: a 2022 systematic review rated the homoeopathy teething studies as very low certainty, and none tested Calc Phos itself. Check with us before giving it to a baby, and check the tablets for lactose.

What does real calcium do for bone that Calc Phos doesn't?

A combined analysis of eight trials in nearly 31,000 adults found calcium plus vitamin D, at milligram and microgram doses, cut total fractures by 15% and hip fractures by 30%. That's what a nutrient dose looks like in the evidence. A 6X tissue salt is a different kind of product, and it hasn't been shown to do the same.

How much, and when

Reference values. The calcium figures don't apply to this product. For context, the NHMRC sets calcium at 500 mg a day for children aged 1 to 3 and 1,300 mg a day for teenagers aged 12 to 18. A 6X tablet adds nothing meaningful towards either.

Typical supplemental range. Schüssler's own method, which Australian packs still follow, was the sixth decimal trituration. In his words: "In my practice I generally use the 6th decimal trituration." Directions vary by brand, so follow the label on the pack you're holding.

Upper level. Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) sets no daily cap on calcium phosphate in homoeopathic use, because there's no meaningful amount to cap. The NHMRC upper limit of 2,500 mg a day applies to calcium as a nutrient, not to a 6X tablet.

Worth knowing. If you're worried about your calcium intake, this isn't the kind of product that fixes it. What you need depends on your age, diet and health, so talk to one of our naturopaths.

Food sources

The register deliberately doesn't pair tissue salts with food, because doing so implies the tablet supplies the nutrient. The calcium that bones and teeth actually use comes from food and, where needed, from a nutritional supplement, not from Calc Phos.

Before you start

If any of these sound like you, talk to one of our naturopaths or your doctor before you start.

  • If you actually need calcium. A 6X tablet supplies no nutritional dose of calcium.
  • Babies and children. There's no safety data for tissue salts in children, and the teething evidence is very low certainty.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. We found no specific evidence.
  • If you're avoiding lactose. Homoeopathic tablets are made by repeatedly grinding the ingredient into lactose.
  • If you're managing blood glucose or tooth decay. Some homoeopathic tablets contain sucrose, which is a permitted excipient.
  • Any condition that needs a diagnosis. The main risk is delaying care that works.
  • If you take prescription medicines, check with your doctor, pharmacist or our naturopaths before you start.

The evidence, and its limits

  • Calc Phos was Schüssler's salt for bones and teeth, which he said "hastens dentition"; that's traditional use only. (Internet Archive / US National Library of Medicine digitised)
  • Teeth and teething are what tradition uses Calc Phos for; a 2022 systematic review rated the evidence for homeopathy in teething very low certainty. (DOI record)
  • There's no trial of Calc Phos itself, and no homeopathic remedy has convincingly beaten placebo in systematic reviews. (DOI record)
  • Calcium phosphate (Schedule 1 item 1102) is allowed for active, excipient and homoeopathic use in listed medicines. (Schedule 1, item 1102)
  • In 41 homeopathy trials, side effects were no more common than in the comparison groups (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.86 to 1.14). (DOI record)

How it works

In Schüssler's biochemic system, each tissue salt matched a mineral he believed the body's cells were short of. Calc Phos was his salt for bones and teeth, and he wrote that it "hastens dentition". That's the tradition, not a research finding, and no trial has tested Calc Phos itself. Think of the name as its place in the system rather than a list of what's inside. A 6X tablet is the sixth step of a one-in-ten dilution by grinding (trituration), so there's no meaningful calcium phosphate left, and your bones and teeth aren't getting calcium from it. If a calcium dose is what you're after, choose a calcium supplement instead.

The Australian rules

Calcium phosphate is item 1102 on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1). It's allowed for active, excipient and homoeopathic use, with no specific requirements or warnings. So the same chemical name can appear on a calcium supplement and on a 6X tablet, and it means very different things on each. Monobasic calcium phosphate (item 3397) is allowed for the same three purposes. Tricalcium phosphate (item 5003) is excipient only, so it can't be the active in a tissue salt. On claims, the permitted indications include teething and teeth-strength wordings that may rest on traditional evidence. "Aids/assists teeth development" and "Aids/assists healthy bone development/growth/building" need scientific evidence, which a 6X tablet doesn't have, so we don't use them. Being allowed isn't the government endorsing a product, and it says nothing about whether the product works.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 1102.
