Hyaluronic Acid
What does hyaluronic acid do?
Hyaluronic acid helps your skin hold onto water, and taken by mouth as sodium hyaluronate, it helps improve skin hydration and elasticity. It's hydration for your skin, from the inside.

Is Hyaluronic Acid right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is hyaluronic acid the same thing as sodium hyaluronate?
They're closely related, because sodium hyaluronate is the salt form, but in Australia the label difference is a legal one. Sodium hyaluronate is the only form allowed as the active ingredient in a listed medicine you take by mouth or apply to your skin. Plain hyaluronic acid is allowed only as an inactive ingredient in medicines applied to the skin, where it helps with texture and moisture rather than carrying the claim. If a product tells you what it does for you, look for sodium hyaluronate on the ingredient panel.
Will it do anything for my joints?
Probably less than the shelf suggests. Products with a suitably evidenced active can legally use wording about joint cartilage, joint mobility and mild joint aches, but the trial evidence we have for oral hyaluronic acid on its own is thin. The one single-ingredient study, in 20 people, didn't reach its main goal of reducing pain. The one properly sized positive trial tested hyaluronic acid in a three-ingredient mix with krill oil and astaxanthin, and didn't say how much hyaluronic acid it contained. So if joints are your reason, come and talk to us before you buy this one.
Is an oral supplement anything like a filler injection?
No, and they shouldn't be compared. The cross-linked hyaluronic acid used in dermal filler injections is a therapeutic device, placed into your tissue by a practitioner and regulated in a completely separate category from supplements and skincare. An oral or topical product is a listed medicine ingredient with its own conditions, dose cap and permitted wording. Nothing on this page is about injections, and no supplement should be sold as a substitute for one.
