Silica
What is silica used for?
Splitting nails and hair that snaps are what bring most people to silica. The soluble form, ch-OSA, is the one with human trials behind it, and you'll also find mineral silica, bamboo and horsetail.

Is Silica right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Will silica make my hair thicker?
One form has been tested for that, and it isn't the one most people buy. In 48 women with fine hair, nine months of choline-stabilised orthosilicic acid (ch-OSA) slowed the loss of hair strength compared with placebo, and the thickness of each hair increased in the ch-OSA group only. Plain mineral silica, bamboo silica and horsetail silica have no similar trial, so for those three, the honest answer is that no one has measured it.
Is horsetail the same thing as a silica supplement?
Not really. Horsetail is a plant that draws silica from the soil, so it's a source of silica, but its own evidence is about something else: traditional European use for fluid balance, plus one small four-day trial in 36 healthy men that measured fluid loss rather than silicon. Horsetail also has cautions that mineral silica doesn't, which is why we treat the two as different products rather than swaps.
Will silica help my bones?
The evidence is weaker than the shelf suggests, and we'd rather say so. A 2024 review of the research on silicon and bone found that people who eat more silicon tend to have denser bones, but that human supplement trials show little to no effect. The doses that reliably affect bone in animals are far above anything a person could eat or swallow. If bone density is your reason for buying, a bone formula is a better-supported place to start.
