Is this the right protein powder for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Can I have whey protein if I am lactose intolerant?
Often, yes, with the right grade. Concentrate has the most lactose, while isolate and hydrolysate have had almost all of it filtered out, although neither is certified lactose-free. Most people with lactose intolerance can manage around 12 grams of lactose a day. A cow's milk protein allergy is a different matter, and no whey grade is suitable.
What is the difference between whey concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate?
How much it's been filtered. Concentrate is up to 80 per cent protein and keeps some lactose, fat and minerals. Isolate is filtered to about 90 per cent protein, so very little lactose is left. Hydrolysate is whey that enzymes have already cut into shorter pieces (peptides). It absorbs fastest and tastes bitter.
Is whey protein isolate worth choosing over concentrate?
It is for specific reasons. Isolate gives you less lactose, less fat and a few more grams of protein per scoop. If dairy sits well with you and you're not counting carbs, concentrate does the same job.
Is grass-fed or native whey better?
Those labels are about something different from the grades. Grass-fed describes how the cows were fed and can apply to any grade, and pasture feeding mainly changes the milk fat, which an isolate has already had removed. Native whey is filtered straight from milk rather than from the whey left over from cheese making. Neither has strong evidence in people showing it does more yet.
