Creatine
Creatine's what your muscles fall back on when you're pushing hard.
It helps them refill energy between heavy efforts, which is why it suits lifting and sprinting more than long steady runs. It's also the most studied sports supplement there is.

Is Creatine right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Do you need to do a loading phase with creatine?
No. Loading with about 20 grams a day for five to seven days fills muscle stores faster, but taking 3 to 5 grams daily gets to a similar point over three to four weeks. Loading is a speed choice, not a requirement, and large single doses are the usual cause of stomach upset.
Is creatine bad for your kidneys?
In healthy adults, controlled research has not shown kidney damage at recommended doses. A 2025 meta-analysis found a small rise in serum creatinine that reflects metabolic turnover rather than kidney impairment. That research did not cover people with existing kidney disease, who should not take creatine without medical supervision.
Is creatine monohydrate better than creatine HCl or buffered creatine?
Monohydrate is the form used in most published trials and the cheapest per gram. A 28-day trial found buffered creatine no better than monohydrate for muscle creatine, body composition or strength, and creatine hydrochloride has little head-to-head loading data. Better solubility in a glass is not the same as better results.
Does creatine work for women and for people over 50?
Creatine works through the same muscle energy system regardless of sex or age, and older adults are an area of active research. In a meta-analysis of memory trials, the benefit appeared in adults aged 66 to 76 and not in younger adults. Talk to one of our naturopaths about your own situation.
