Description
L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid found almost exclusively in the leaves of Camellia sinensis, the plant that green, black and white teas all come from. It is the compound most often credited for the settled, unhurried quality of a cup of green tea, and it is widely used on its own or alongside caffeine by people who want to stay composed rather than wired. Primabolics L-Theanine Capsules contain L-theanine as the single active, with no stimulants and no proprietary blend, in a capsule bottle that is Australian owned and manufactured. It is most often taken in the evening, before bed.

What is L-theanine?
L-theanine is the amino acid in tea leaves, taken for focus in a much bigger dose than a cup of tea gives you. Take it an hour or so before you need it.

Is L-Theanine right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does L-theanine make you sleepy?
No, and that's why people take it during the day. Theanine isn't a sedative, and combined trials found no significant effect on tiredness. Its measurable effect is a shift in EEG alpha activity, the rhythm of relaxed wakefulness. Night-time products with theanine usually get their drowsiness from something else in the formula.
Why do people take L-theanine with caffeine?
Because the pairing has stronger evidence. A systematic review found theanine plus caffeine led to small to moderate improvements in reaction time, accuracy when staying alert, and switching attention, in the second hour after taking it. The trials used a median of 82 milligrams of theanine with 89 milligrams of caffeine, roughly the ratio found in the tea leaf.
How much L-theanine is in a cup of green tea?
A median of about 8 to 30 milligrams a cup, which is roughly a tenth of a standard 200 milligram supplement. Matcha and shade-grown teas contain more, because you consume the whole leaf or the growing method raises the theanine in the leaf. So drinking tea and taking a capsule aren't the same amount.
Does L-theanine help with anxiety?
To be honest, the evidence is modest and short term. A review of 31 trials found the results for anxiety inconsistent and not statistically significant overall, and the small combined effect on stress came mostly from studies at high risk of bias. If anxiety is the problem, it's worth talking to a health professional.
