Description
Planet Organic Yerba Mate is a single herb infusion of certified organic yerba mate, the leaf of a South American holly that has been drunk as a daily brew across Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil for generations. The leaf in these bags is green, sun dried and cut rather than roasted or smoked, so the cup is fresh and grassy with a faintly bitter finish instead of the toasted flavour of a roasted mate. It comes as 25 compostable tea bags with no strings, tags or envelopes. One bag on freshly boiled water is ready in four to five minutes, and yerba mate naturally contains caffeine, so it is usually poured in the morning or the early afternoon rather than late in the evening.

Suggested Use
Place the tea bag in a cup or teapot and use one bag per person. Add freshly boiled water and infuse for four to five minutes, then lift the bag out.
For iced mate, brew two bags in 250 mL of hot water and let it cool before pouring over ice. For a stronger cup, add a second bag rather than steeping for longer.

What is yerba mate?
Yerba mate is South America's favourite brew, a caffeine-containing leaf you brew like tea. Choose it loose to brew by the spoonful, or in teabags for a quick cup.

Is Yerba Mate right for you?
Common questions
What's yerba mate called on an Australian label?
On a medicine label, it's Ilex paraguariensis. The Australian rules list yerba mate only by its botanical name, on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) in the Permissible Ingredients Determination. So yerba mate on the front of a pack and Ilex paraguariensis on the back are the same plant. That listing sets the caffeine limits and the label warnings.
Does yerba mate contain caffeine?
Yes. The Australian rules treat caffeine as a required part of Ilex paraguariensis, so any medicine made from it has to state how much caffeine it contains in total. They cap it at 400 mg a day and 100 mg in any 3 hour period. We don't have a caffeine figure for a typical cup, so check the pack you're buying.
Can I have yerba mate while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Talk to your health professional first. Australian medicine labels containing yerba mate have to carry the warning 'Caffeine intake more than 200 mg per day is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.' That limit covers all your caffeine, so the coffee, tea and chocolate you already have count towards it too.
