Description
Planet Organic Turmeric is the dried root of Curcuma longa, ground to a fine golden powder and packed as a single ingredient with no fillers and no additives. It comes as a 300 g recyclable tub, the catering size of the brand's turmeric rather than the small shaker. Turmeric has a peppery, slightly bitter aroma and it is the colour and the earthy base note in most commercial curry powders, so it goes into curries, dals, rice, pickles and relishes at the point where the ground spices meet the hot oil.

Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: everyday cooking, and for vegan and vegetarian diets, since the only ingredient is the ground root. Gluten free.

Suggested Use
Add turmeric early. Stir it in with the onion and the other ground spices and let it cook in the oil for a minute before the liquid goes in, which takes the raw edge off the flavour.
A very small amount in the water for one cup of rice gives a soft yellow colour. It also goes into pickles, relishes, spice rubs and salad dressings. Start with a little and taste as you go, because the flavour is earthy and slightly bitter and the powder stains hands, boards and cloth.

Certified organic turmeric can be added to pickles and relishes. Try adding a very small amount of organic turmeric to the water when cooking 1 cup of rice. This imparts a slight yellow colour and is a cheaper option than saffron.
