Slippery Elm
A soothing coat for a raw throat or tender tummy.
Slippery elm is the inner bark of an American elm, rich in mucilage. Stir the powder into water and it swells into a smooth, slippery gel that coats on the way down.

Is Slippery Elm right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Does slippery elm actually work?
Honestly, it hasn't been properly tested. We reviewed more than ten thousand clinical study summaries and found no trial of slippery elm on its own. That isn't the same as showing it doesn't work. A food-grade bark that acts physically is hard to test against a placebo, and nobody owns the ingredient, so nobody pays for the research.
Powder or capsules?
If you want to coat your throat and food pipe on the way down, the powder mixed into water does that and a capsule can't. If convenience matters more, capsules are easier and the gel still forms further down. No study has compared the two, so that's reasoning rather than evidence.
Should I take it away from my medicines?
Yes, as a simple precaution. Slippery elm forms a thick gel in your gut, and nobody has measured whether that changes how other medicines are absorbed. No one is saying it does, but taking them a couple of hours apart is easy. If you're being treated for bowel disease, talk to your specialist.
