Probiotics
Probiotics are the good bacteria already living in your gut.
They help you digest things, and they act as a barrier against the microbes you'd rather weren't there. Different strains do different jobs, so the strain name on the back matters more than the billions count on the front.

Is Probiotics right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Are all probiotics the same?
No, and the difference is not a matter of degree. A health effect shown for one strain belongs to that strain alone, not to its species or genus. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 are one species with different research and different uses. A label saying only 'Lactobacillus' tells you little.
How do you read a probiotic strain name?
Read it in three parts. In Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Lactobacillus is the genus, rhamnosus is the species, and GG is the strain designation - the letters or numbers identifying the exact bacterial line tested. Without that third part you cannot check what the research studied, or match a practitioner's recommendation.
Does a higher CFU count mean a better probiotic?
Not on its own. CFU counts live organisms able to multiply, so it measures quantity rather than relevance, and a higher count is not necessarily more effective. What matters is whether the strains inside have been studied, and whether the count is guaranteed to expiry rather than to manufacture.
Do probiotics need to be refrigerated?
It depends on the product, and the label is the authority. Some formulations hold their declared count at room temperature; others lose viability without refrigeration. Spore-forming Bacillus strains are built for ambient storage. Heat is the common enemy, so never add a probiotic powder to a hot drink.
