Omega-3
Most people take fish oil to look after their heart.
EPA and DHA are the two fats doing the work, and your body can't make useful amounts of either. Check those two numbers on the back of the pack. The big fish oil number on the front tells you nothing about strength.

How the forms compare
Common questions
How much EPA and DHA is in a 1,000 mg fish oil capsule?
Usually around 300 milligrams in total. About 180 milligrams of EPA and 120 milligrams of DHA. The 1,000 mg on the front of the pack is the weight of the whole oil, not the active omega-3s. Concentrated products fit several times that into the same capsule, which is what you are paying for.
Is algal oil as good as fish oil?
For DHA, yes. Microalgae are where fish get their omega-3 in the first place, and the bioavailability of DHA from algal oil is equivalent to that from cooked salmon. Algal oils tend to be DHA-dominant with less EPA, and they are the only ready-made vegan source, so they suit vegans and anyone avoiding seafood.
Can you take fish oil if you are on blood thinners?
Not without medical advice. Australian omega-3 concentrates must carry a label statement telling people on anticoagulants to seek medical advice before taking the product. Fish oil affects platelets, and monitoring of INR is recommended alongside warfarin. Talk to the doctor managing the medicine before you start, not after.
What is the difference between EPA and DHA?
They are two different long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. DHA is structural. It concentrates in brain grey matter and the retina, and it dominates in algal and calamari oils. EPA is mainly a precursor the body converts into short-lived signalling molecules. Most fish oils supply more EPA than DHA; check the ratio on the panel.
