Vitamin K2
The vitamin K that reaches your bones.
K2 helps hold mineral in your bones as you get older. It stays in your blood longer than K1 from your greens, so more of it gets where it's needed. Look for MK-7 on the label.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Is vitamin K2 better than K1?
For bones, nobody has actually tested that. No trial has compared K2 with K1 head to head on a bone or artery outcome, so claims that K2 wins are based on how they work in the body rather than a direct test. What has been measured is where each one goes: your liver clears K1 quickly and uses it for clotting factors, while the long-chain menaquinones stay in your blood and reach bone. The K1 supplement trials haven't been impressive either. 200 µg a day alongside vitamin D and calcium shifted density at one wrist site and nowhere else. For everyday vitamin K from your diet, though, greens do the job well.
Do I need to take K2 with vitamin D3?
It's a sensible pairing, but you don't have to. A meta-analysis of eight trials found vitamin K taken with vitamin D lifted total bone density compared with control, which is why the two are so often sold together. On the other hand, a one-year trial in older adults found that adding calcium and vitamin D3 to 90 µg of K2 gave no extra benefit over K2 alone. So if you already take vitamin D, there's a reasonable case for the combination, and if you don't, K2 still works without it. Either way, take both with a meal that has some fat, because they're both fat-soluble.
Can I get enough K2 from food?
From one food, yes, but most Australians won't eat it. Natto, soybeans fermented with Bacillus subtilis, has about 850 µg of vitamin K in an 85 g serve, mostly as MK-7. A 2025 review of human studies found K2 levels genuinely improved in several natto studies and in one on Jarlsberg cheese. Fermented cheeses are the other known food source, though the amounts aren't in the reference tables we use. Green vegetables won't fill this gap: kale, spinach and broccoli are full of vitamin K, but it's K1. Most people get enough K1 easily, while enough K2 is harder to come by, and that's why K2 is sold on its own.
