Vitamin B3
What does vitamin B3 do?
Vitamin B3 (niacin) helps your body release energy from food and keeps your nervous system healthy. It comes in two forms, and nicotinamide is the one that won't leave you hot and flushed.

Is Vitamin B3 right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Will vitamin B3 lower my cholesterol?
That's a question for your doctor rather than a supplement, and the trial evidence shows why. The niacin doses tested on blood fats were 1,500 to 3,000 mg a day, given under supervision. When the AIM-HIGH trial added that kind of dose to statin treatment in 3,414 people, the rate of heart and blood vessel events was 16.4 per cent, compared with 16.2 per cent on placebo, and the trial stopped early because it wasn't working. HPS2-THRIVE, an even larger trial, found no drop in those events and more serious side effects instead.
Why does niacin make me flush?
At higher doses, nicotinic acid, the plain niacin form, triggers a flush: warmth, redness, itching or tingling, usually across your face and upper body. It's uncomfortable rather than dangerous, and it's the main reason people stop taking it. Nicotinamide doesn't cause it at any studied dose, because it works through a different pathway. If a product flushes you and you'd rather it didn't, change to a product that names nicotinamide on the label.
Is no-flush niacin the same as niacin?
No. "No-flush niacin" is inositol hexanicotinate, six nicotinic acid molecules joined to one molecule of inositol, and it's a separate substance. It isn't on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) under its own name, so it can't be the stated active in an Australian listed medicine. Testing of no-flush products found several released almost no free nicotinic acid, which undermines the reason they're sold. If you want to avoid the flush, nicotinamide is the better-understood option.
