Description
Star anise is the dried fruit of Illicium verum, an evergreen tree of southern China and northern Vietnam, and each fruit dries into the eight pointed star the spice is named for. It is the sweet liquorice note behind Chinese five spice, Vietnamese pho and a pot of mulled wine, and it is far stronger than aniseed, so a small amount carries a large pot. Mindful Foods' star anise is certified organic, grown in India and packed in Australia. Drop it into a simmering broth, a chai, a braise or a poaching syrup and lift it out before serving.
Product Strengths
- Infuses broths, chai, mulled wine and poaching syrups with a sweet liquorice warmth.
- Goes into braises, curries, slow cooked pork and Chinese five spice blends.
- Pairs with pears, plums, stone fruit, orange and dark chocolate in sweet cooking.
- Certified organic.
- Grown in India and packed in Australia.
Suitable For / Not Suitable For
Suitable for: Everyday snacking and meals.
Not suitable for: Anyone with an allergy to the listed ingredients.
Suggested Use
Make a spiced chai or mulled wine, add it to curries and other spicy dishes, or infuse it to flavour sweet desserts. Simmer it whole and remove it before serving, or grind it finely and use it sparingly; the flavour is strong and builds quickly, and the whole stars are for infusing rather than eating.
