Sea Salts

Salt from evaporated seawater rather than a mine.

Same compound as table salt underneath, with traces of other minerals that give it its colour and flavour. Flake size is what changes how it behaves in cooking.

Is sea salt different from table salt?

Chemically they're the same thing. Sodium chloride. Sea salt is evaporated from seawater and keeps small traces of other minerals, which is where the colour and the flavour differences come from. Table salt is usually mined and refined, and often has iodine added. For Australian regulatory purposes both are sodium chloride.

Does sea salt count as a supplement?

Not usually. Sodium chloride is a permitted listed ingredient with no conditions attached, but sea salt sold for cooking is a food under the Food Standards Code. Bath salts are a different use again. Which rules apply depends on what the product is sold for rather than on what's in it.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Sodium chloride is Schedule 1 item 4581, permitted listed with no specific requirements, no warning statements, no dose cap and no route restriction. One of the plainest regulatory positions in the whole instrument. "Sea salt" isn't itself a Schedule 1 name; for Determination purposes it's sodium chloride, and the harvesting method doesn't create a separate ingredient. No permitted indication is cached against sodium chloride or sea salt. Most sea salt reaches customers as a food, under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code rather than the medicines framework.
