Chlorella
Vibrant green algae, the wholefood way.
Chlorella is a freshwater green alga, dried into a powder or pressed into small green tablets. Take it on its own, or find it blended with spirulina in green powders.

Is Chlorella right for you?
Common questions
Why does Australian law treat chlorella as an iodine ingredient?
Because Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) says so. Items 1343 CHLORELLA and 1345 CHLORELLA VULGARIS both state: "Iodine is a mandatory component of Chlorella. Only for external use when the concentration of iodine in the medicine (excluding salts derivatives or iodophors) is 2.5% or less. Only for internal use when the medicine contains less than 300 micrograms of iodine per maximum recommended daily dose." A mandatory component has to be measured, so a listed chlorella medicine has had its iodine counted. Chlorella sold as a food falls outside that rule completely, so a tub sold as food hasn't.
Is there an approved health claim for chlorella in Australia?
No. We checked the TGA's full list of permitted health claims and found no entry for chlorella, Chlorella pyrenoidosa or Chlorella vulgaris, so there's no permitted health wording we can use for this alga. Being a permitted ingredient means chlorella can legally go into a listed medicine. It doesn't say what that medicine can claim, and it isn't a government endorsement of the alga.
Does the species name on a chlorella label matter?
It changes what the product is legally allowed to do. Chlorella and Chlorella pyrenoidosa are both listed with purpose code E, the code for an inactive ingredient, while Chlorella vulgaris is listed with codes A and E, so it's the name that allows active use in a listed medicine. The iodine condition is recorded against Chlorella and Chlorella vulgaris on the permitted ingredients list. If a label names a species, check that species' own entry rather than the general one.
