Potato Flours

What is potato flour used for?

Potato flour is a fine flour you use in place of wheat flour for baking, or to thicken sauces, soups and stews. The ones we stock are made from sweet potato, so check the label for which one you've got.

Is Potato Flours right for you?

Common questions

Is potato flour the same as potato starch?

No. Potato flour is made by drying and grinding the whole potato, while potato starch is extracted from the potato, so they're different ingredients and don't swap one for one in a recipe. In Australia, potato starch is on the permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) as item 4114, but potato flour isn't.

Is potato flour a supplement in Australia?

No. It's sold as a food, not a listed medicine, so it isn't covered by Australia's permitted ingredients list, which only applies to ingredients in listed medicines. Potato flour and potato aren't on that list, and potato starch's listing as item 4114 doesn't come with any permitted health claim.

The evidence, and its limits

The Australian rules

Potato flour, and potato itself, have no entry on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), and that's expected, not a ban. Schedule 1 covers ingredients for medicines, and potato flour is sold as a food. Potato starch is listed separately, as item 4114 POTATO STARCH, allowed in listed medicines. That entry covers the extracted starch, not flour made from the whole potato. It doesn't make potato flour a medicine, and there's no approved health claim for either.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 4114.
