Description
A groat is the whole oat grain with only the inedible hull removed - nothing cut, rolled or steamed. Lotus Organic Oat Groats are therefore about as close to the intact wholegrain as oats get, and they cook up chewy and nutty rather than creamy. Use them where you would use a whole grain: slow-cooked breakfast bowls, soups, stews and grain salads. It comes as the 500 g pack, barcode 9317127638346. Simmer them for around forty five minutes, or soak them overnight to shorten that, and serve them the way you would a barley or a wheat berry: warm with milk in the morning, or cold in a grain salad.

Oat Groats
What are oat groats?
Oat groats are the whole oat kernel, not steamed, rolled or chopped, so they keep the most texture of any oat. Soak them overnight or pop them in the slow cooker for a hearty, satisfying bowl.

Is Oat Groats right for you?
Common questions
What's the difference between oat groats and rolled oats?
Groats are the whole oat kernel, as it comes off the plant. Rolled oats are those same groats, steamed and then flattened into flakes. It's the same grain in both bags. The steaming and rolling is the only difference, and it's why groats take longer to cook. If you want breakfast faster, rolled or steel cut oats are the same grain with more of the work done.
Does "wheat free" on an oat groat pack mean it's gluten free?
No. Wheat free means there's no wheat, which is a different question from gluten, and oats have gluten of their own. Food Standards Australia New Zealand requires oats to be declared on the label when they contain gluten, using that word in the allergen summary. So check the allergen summary on the pack, not the front label.
