Chocolate
The everyday treat, in dark, milk and white.
Chocolate is made from roasted cacao beans, and each kind has its own balance of cocoa, sugar and milk. That's what gives each its taste, and decides how it works in your baking.

Is Chocolate right for you?
Common questions
What's the difference between dark, milk and white chocolate?
It comes down to how much cocoa solids, sugar and milk each one has. Dark chocolate has the most cocoa solids and little or no milk. Milk chocolate adds milk solids and extra sugar for a sweeter, milder taste. White chocolate is made from cocoa butter alone, with no cocoa solids, which is why it doesn't taste like cocoa. The three aren't interchangeable, and if you're after cacao's studied effects, choose cacao powder or a high-cocoa dark chocolate rather than milk or white.
Is chocolate regulated as a medicine in Australia?
No. Chocolate is sold and eaten as an everyday food, under food standards law rather than medicine rules. The cacao it's made from has its own entries on the TGA's permitted ingredients list, but those don't apply to a chocolate bar on the shelf, and there's no TGA permitted health claim for chocolate itself.
