Spirulina
Spirulina's the pond-grown algae powder people take as a concentrated food.
It's a cyanobacterium rather than a plant, dried to that deep green by a pigment called C-phycocyanin. In pooled trials it shifted blood lipids, and less reliably weight. Where it was grown matters, because open ponds are where the contamination question sits.

Is Spirulina right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is spirulina actually good for anything measurable?
The most consistent finding is blood lipids. Across 20 studies in 1,076 adults it lowered LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglycerides. Weight came down by about 1.85 kg in people with overweight or obesity, though the trials disagreed with each other a lot. Inflammatory markers were mostly unchanged. It isn't the cure-all the marketing suggests.
Should I worry about contamination?
It's the live question in the literature rather than a settled one. Spirulina is grown in open ponds, and reviews report possible microcystins and other toxins depending on how cultivation is managed. The practical answer is to buy from a supplier that tests batches and publishes results. We'd rather tell you that than pretend the question doesn't exist.
What's the difference between spirulina and chlorella?
Different organisms with different rules. Spirulina is a cyanobacterium and carries no special Schedule 1 conditions. Chlorella is a green alga that carries iodine as a mandatory component, with internal use capped below 300 micrograms of iodine a day. If you've got a thyroid consideration, that difference matters.
