Vitamin E
What does vitamin E do?
Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps shield the layer of fat around each of your cells from free-radical damage. You'll find it in seeds, nuts and vegetable oils, and in a supplement when your diet needs a hand.

Is Vitamin E right for you?
How the forms compare
Common questions
Is natural vitamin E better than synthetic?
On strength, yes. Natural d-alpha-tocopherol has about twice the activity per milligram of synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol, which is why the conversions differ: 1 mg of natural is 1.49 IU, while 1 mg of synthetic is 2.22 IU. Check the label for a d with no l in front of alpha-tocopherol.
Is it safe to take a 500 IU vitamin E capsule every day?
That's a conversation to have with a health professional rather than a decision to make at the shelf. Pooled data from 19 trials in 135,967 people found doses of 400 IU a day and above went along with a small rise in deaths from any cause, and most Australian capsules are at or above that dose.
Should I take vitamin E for my heart?
The evidence says no. The largest long-term trial followed about 9,500 people at high risk of heart disease on 400 IU a day for a median of seven years. It found no reduction in heart problems, and higher rates of heart failure and hospital stays for heart failure in the vitamin E group.
