Vitamin B5
How much vitamin B5 do I need?
You need about 6 mg of B5 a day if you're a man and 4 mg if you're a woman. A B5 tablet, usually calcium pantothenate, is a simple top-up when your diet isn't covering it.

How the forms compare
Common questions
Does vitamin B5 help acne?
We can't tell you it does. Acne is one of the most common reasons people buy high-strength B5, so we looked for the evidence, and we couldn't find a single trial of pantothenic acid for acne. That doesn't prove it doesn't work. It means the claim hasn't been tested well enough for us to make it. If acne is why you're here, talk to one of our naturopaths about the whole picture.
Does vitamin B5 help with hair loss?
Not on the evidence we could find. One trial gave women calcium pantothenate as one of four active treatments, with no placebo group, and its summary doesn't report how the pantothenate-only group did. The other gave dexpanthenol by weekly injection, combined with biotin, and compared two brands rather than a placebo. Neither tells you what a B5 tablet would do. If you're losing hair, it's worth talking to your health professional about why.
Is pantethine the same as vitamin B5?
No. Pantethine is a related compound, made of two pantothenic acid molecules joined through cysteamine, and it's a separate substance. It's the form behind the one well-designed positive trial in this area, but that trial used 600 to 900 mg a day in 32 people, and it was about cholesterol, which is a question for your doctor. Pantethine also isn't an ingredient name on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1), so its status in a listed medicine needs checking.
