Thiamine Hydrochloride

What is thiamine hydrochloride?

Thiamine hydrochloride is the standard form of vitamin B1, found in most plain B1 tablets and B complex blends. Vitamin B1 helps your body turn carbohydrate into energy, and you need a little every day.

Is Thiamine Hydrochloride right for you?

Thiamine hydrochloride is the everyday vitamin B1 top-up. These are the questions our naturopaths ask in store.

A good fit if

  • You want a straightforward vitamin B1 top-up, on its own or as part of a B complex
  • You're pregnant or breastfeeding and want to meet the higher recommended intake for those stages
  • You understand a supplement like this only helps if your diet isn't already covering your needs

Check with us first if

  • You take prescription medicine of any kind. We don't have interaction data for thiamine, so we can't rule anything in or out.
  • You drink heavily, or have a history of alcohol use disorder. Thiamine needs are known to be higher in that case, although we don't yet have the specific guidance.
  • You're giving it to a child. Ask us for the right dose rather than working from an adult label.
  • If you take prescription medicines, check with your doctor, pharmacist or our naturopaths before you start.

Common questions

Is thiamine hydrochloride the same as vitamin B1?

Yes, in practice. Vitamin B1 is the vitamin, and thiamine hydrochloride is the water-soluble salt used to provide it in most Australian tablets and B complex blends. The TGA's own records link the two directly. Benfotiamine is different. It's a synthetic, fat-soluble version sold and studied for a separate purpose, and it isn't on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1) the way thiamine hydrochloride is.

How much vitamin B1 do you need a day?

The NHMRC recommends 1.2 mg a day for adult men and 1.1 mg for adult women, rising to 1.4 mg in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Children need 0.5 mg at ages 1 to 3, rising through the school years. What you need depends on your age, diet and health, so talk to one of our naturopaths if you're unsure.

Can you take too much thiamine hydrochloride?

No upper limit has been set. The NHMRC says there isn't enough data to estimate one, which means the information is missing rather than that any amount is proven safe. We don't have data on dose-related side effects for this form, so we don't make a claim either way beyond what the NHMRC says.

How much, and when

Reference values. The NHMRC recommends 1.2 mg a day for adult men and 1.1 mg for adult women, rising to 1.4 mg in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Children need 0.5 mg at ages 1 to 3, rising to 0.9 mg at 9 to 13 and up to 1.2 mg for teenage boys.

Typical supplemental range. We don't yet have a confirmed source for how much a standard Australian thiamine hydrochloride tablet contains. Tablets are usually well above the 1.1–1.2 mg daily figure, but we can't yet say exactly how much.

Upper level. None is set. In the NHMRC's own words, "the upper level of intake of thiamin cannot be estimated", because there isn't enough data to work one out.

Worth knowing. What you need depends on your age, diet and health, so talk to one of our naturopaths.

Before you start

If any of these sound like you, talk to one of our naturopaths or your doctor before you start.

  • Any prescription medicine. We found no interaction data for thiamine hydrochloride.
  • Heavy drinking or alcohol use disorder. Your needs are known to be higher, but we don't have specific guidance.
  • Giving it to a child. Ask us for the right dose rather than guessing from an adult label.
  • If you take prescription medicines, check with your doctor, pharmacist or our naturopaths before you start.

The evidence, and its limits

  • Adults need 1.2 mg of vitamin B1 a day for men and 1.1 mg for women, according to the NHMRC's reference values. (NHMRC nutrient reference values)
  • Thiamine hydrochloride is Schedule 1 item 4917, allowed in listed medicines with no specific requirement, warning or dose cap. (Schedule 1, item 4917)
  • The TGA's own ingredient records link thiamine hydrochloride directly to "Vitamin B1", the ingredient most plain B1 tablets are based on. (Schedule 1, item 4917)
  • We don't have a clinical trial of thiamine hydrochloride itself; the trials we have used benfotiamine, a different, fat-soluble form.
  • No upper limit of intake is set for thiamin, because the NHMRC says there isn't enough data to estimate one. (NHMRC nutrient reference values)

How it works

Thiamine's job is to help your cells turn carbohydrate into energy you can use. It works as a helper molecule that certain enzymes need on hand before they can break down sugar for fuel. The same enzyme pathway keeps your nerve cells signalling properly, which is why running low can show up as both an energy problem and a nerve problem. Your body holds only a small reserve, so you need a steady supply from food or a tablet. Thiamine hydrochloride is simply thiamine bound to hydrochloric acid to make it stable and water-soluble, so a tablet dissolves and is absorbed much like the vitamin in food.

The Australian rules

Thiamine hydrochloride is item 4917 on Australia's permitted ingredients list (Schedule 1, Determination No. 2 of 2026), allowed in listed medicines. It has no specific requirement, warning statement or daily dose cap. The TGA's own ingredient records link it directly to "Vitamin B1", alongside two other permitted thiamine forms, thiamine and thiamine nitrate. Being allowed isn't the government endorsing any product or claim.

Read the instrument: Schedule 1, item 4917.
